A new trailer for The King’s Speech and Les Miserables director Tom Hooper’s new drama The Danish Girl has landed online. The film stars Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander as artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener and traces their relationship as they navigate Lili’s transition into becoming a woman, making her one of the world’s transgender pioneers. I caught the film at the Toronto International Film Festival and it’s solid, with Hooper approaching the subject matter with a very delicate touch. It’s almost too sensitive at times, as this is a very soft-spoken and quiet film, but Redmayne and Vikander turn in a pair of spectacular performances. Indeed, Vikander essentially overshadows Redmayne here with her understated work as his supportive yet struggling wife.

This trailer highlights the relationship between Lili and Gerda, as well as the scrutiny Lili faced from the public as she began to more publicly make the transition into a woman. It’s a significant portion of the film, but the beating heart of The Danish Girl is the relationship between Lili and Gerda.
