Marvel has opted to release a tiny Valentine’s Day gift for all the Marvel’s Daredevil fans out there in the form of a short promo for the Netflix series’ second season. While it doesn’t feature any footage, it does highlight a line of dialogue that’s key to the Daredevil/Punisher relationship and reveals that a new full trailer for the second season will be online tomorrow.
The new episodes find some major creative changes behind the scenes, as Season 1 showrunner Steven S. DeKnight departed the show due to scheduling issues, paving the way for staff writers/producers Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez to step in and act as showrunners for Season 2. Drew Goddard—who initially developed the adaptation for Marvel and Netflix before departing ahead of Season 1’s start of production—continues to provide input as an executive producer, but this is very much Petrie and Ramirez’s show and it’ll be interesting to see if the creative dynamic shifts much from how Season 1 played out.
Marvel’s first Netflix series was, by all accounts, a success, with critical support and fervent fan interest once the episodes dropped. The second season was quickly ordered, and with Kingpin sidelined, the show now introduces Frank Castle aka The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) to the mix, as well as Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung). The series also has a high bar to clear not only owed to Season 1’s success, but to Marvel’s second Netflix series Marvel’s Jessica Jones, which turned out to be even better than Daredevil. I’m curious to see what impact—if any—that show’s brilliant handle on character, theme, and plot structure has on this second season of Daredevil.
We may get an inkling tomorrow with the new trailer, but for now enjoy this brief tease that was revealed on Twitter. Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and Rosario Dawson return for the second season of Daredevil, which will be released on Netflix on March 18th.
