Surprise! It's another series from Netflix that seems to have snuck up out of nowhere. And yet, Netflix knows exactly how to get my attention -- Christina Applegate? Linda Cardellini? I'm in. Dead to Me follows two women, Jen (Applegate) and Judy (Cardellini), who become unlikely friends after meeting in a grief support group. As Jen starts to become closer to Judy, though, it becomes apparent that her new friend is not who she seems. And yet, she's also the only person who has been there for her as she continues to search for the hit-and-run driver who killed her husband.

The trailer for the series leaves its tone a little bit in doubt. On the one hand, it looks like it could be a tongue-in-cheek drama that investigates the toll of loss and the many ways people work through their grief. It also looks a bit like a Lifetime-style light horror, as Judy could just be a crazy person who is manipulating Jen. Or it could be a comedy about adult friendships, or all of these things -- it's unclear! Although any/all seem worth exploring (at least to give it a chance).

The series is created by Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls, One Big Happy), and also stars James Marsden (Steve), Ed Asner (Abe) and Brandon Scott (Nick). Jessica Elbaum (Gloria Sanchez Prods.), Christie Smith and Christina Applegate also serve as executive producers, in addition to Adam McKay and Will Ferrell for Gloria Sanchez Productions.

Dead to Me premieres on Netflix Friday, May 3rd; check out the trailer below:

Here's the official synopsis for Dead to Me:

Jen (Christina Applegate) is a sardonic widow determined to solve her husband’s recent hit-and-run murder. Judy (Linda Cardellini) is an optimistic free spirit who’s recently suffered her own tragic loss. When the two women meet at a support group, they become unlikely friends despite their polar-opposite personalities. But as they bond over bottles of wine, Entenmann’s cookies and a shared affinity for The Facts of Life, Judy desperately tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it. Dead to Me, created by Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls, One Big Happy), is an addictive dark comedy that dives into the painfully unfiltered, weirdly funny waters of grief, loss and forgiveness. From creator and executive producer Liz Feldman, Dead to Me stars Christina Applegate (Jen), Linda Cardellini (Judy), James Marsden (Steve), Ed Asner (Abe) and Brandon Scott (Nick). Jessica Elbaum (Gloria Sanchez Prods.), Christie Smith and Christina Applegate also serve as executive producers, in addition to Adam McKay and Will Ferrell for Gloria Sanchez Productions. Dead to Me is produced by CBS Television Studios for Netflix.
