Deadpool is going to give its lead character a chance to shine, but he’s not the only mutant who’s getting his due. The upcoming film also stars Andre Tricotruex as Colossus, a character seen before in the X-Men movies X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, in the past, Daniel Cudmore played the role, and it didn’t amount to more than a cameo. It was nice to see the character use his superpower, but he didn’t get to do much.

It sounds like that won’t be the case for Deadpool. Speaking to TechTimes [via THR], Tricotruex says "The Colossus you're going to see in Deadpool is very true to the original character in the comic book. [Director] Tim Miller had a really clear vision, and the Deadpool people had a really clear vision of what they wanted. They wanted Colossus to be very traditional to the original story."

Although how that factors into Deadpool’s narrative is unclear. In the comics, Piotr "Peter" Rasputin was born on a Soviet collective farm, and his powers manifested when he saved his sister Illyana from a runaway tractor. Soon after, he was contacted by Charles Xavier to be part of the X-Men.

It’s not a flashy backstory, but it’s one that could work (minus the X-Men part, which may involve larger discussions of what the present day X-Men look like in a post Days of Future Past universe), and can certainly be divorced from what we’ve seen of the character so far in the movies. At the very least, this new Colossus will indeed be Russian, so they’re keeping true to that part. As for the rest, he should be a fun straight man. Colossus is an upstanding guy in the comics, but in Deadpool, it looks like he’s working as muscle for Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand).

As for what else fans can expect from this new take on old Colossus, Tricotruex says, "We kept it very traditional to the comic book. Actually, we kept it exactly like the comic book, so you could be able to derive your own conclusion from that."

Deadpool opens February 12, 2016, and also stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle/Copycat, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, and Ed Skrein as Ajax.
