As Scott Derrickson continues to film Doctor Strange ahead of its 2016 release date, Marvel continues to fill out its cast. Benedict Cumberbatch leads this origin story for the MCU’s Sorcerer Supreme, and now Amy Landecker of Amazon’s Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning Transparent has joined in a mysterious role.
The Wrap first reported the news of Landecker’s involvement, though the trade states the details of her character are still under wraps. It’s difficult to pose a guess. Rachel McAdams holds a leading female role that’s rumored to be a Night Nurse comic character Christine Palmer instead of a love interest for Strange. If true, than Landecker could be taking on that role. Another hypothesis is that the actress will portray another sorcerer. Looking back to the comics and the Doctor Strange animated movie, Stephen Strange travels to Tibet to cure his hand injury and discovers The Ancient One, a powerful sorcerer with numerous disciples in the mystic arts. At this point, though, it’s anyone’s guess.
The transformative Tilda Swinton portrays a gender-bending version of The Ancient One in Doctor Strange, while 12 Years a Slave actor Chiwetel Ejiofor has been spotted on the film’s Nepal set as Strange’s rival and fellow sorcerer Baron Mordo. Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) and Michael Stuhlbarg (Steve Jobs) are also featured, while Jon Spaits of Prometheus penned the script.
Landecker plays Sarah Pfefferman on the acclaimed Transparent, which earned numerous awards. She also appeared on FX’s Married and is set to star opposite Susan Sarandon, Rose Byrne, and J.K. Simmons in The Meddler.
Official plot details are under wraps, though the superhero giant previously confirmed it will see Strange, a celebrated neurosurgeon, discover “the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions” after suffering a horrific car accident. The film is part of Marvel’s Phase Three lineup, which also includes the introduction of new heroes Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Captain Marvel.
Doctor Strange will hit theaters on November 4, 2016.
