FX has finally ordered a pilot for Donald Glover's comedy series Atlanta.  We first heard about the project over a year ago, and it looks like there's finally some forward motion. The show will center around two cousins on their way up in the Atlanta rap scene. Glover will serve as Executive Producer, along with Paul Simms (GirlsFlight of the Conchords), and Dianne McGunigle.

Glover got his start as a writer on 30 Rock, and after a three year stint on that show he certainly has the experience to pen his own sitcom.  As Troy Barnes on Community, Glover played one of my all time favorite sitcom characters and demonstrated preternatural comedic skill - from timing to physical gags, Glover was always on point.  Just last Friday he scored his first Grammy nominations as Childish Gambino.  Basically this sounds a series fine-tuned to Glover's talents and sensibilities, and I couldn't be more excited. Hit the jump for more.

In Atlanta Glover will play "Earnest 'Earn' Marks" a college drop-out who rediscovers his ambition when his estranged cousin becomes a sudden star.  Motivated by his cousin's success, Earn sets out to accomplish the life he always dreamed for himself.  Atlanta will follow the two cousins on their way up in the Atlanta rap scene, and their opposing views on art verses commerce, success and race will provide regular points of conflict.

Atlanta is the fourth comedy series FX Networks ordered this year and with their track record (Louie, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League) I'd guess we're about to get a wealth of excellent new comedies.  Read the full press release below:

LOS ANGELES, December 12, 2014 – FX Networks has ordered the comedy series pilot Atlanta created by and starring award-winning actor and writer Donald Glover (Community30 Rock), it was announced today by Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, the Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions.

Glover serves as Executive Producer, along with Paul Simms (GirlsFlight of the Conchords, NewsRadio), and Dianne McGunigle of Schiff Company. The pilot will be produced by FX Productions.

“Donald Glover is a uniquely talented actor and performer who brings real-life experience to this subject matter,” said Grad. “Not only is Donald a very gifted actor, he has achieved tremendous success and acclaim as the musical artist Childish Gambino.  He, along with Paul Simms, has a very honest, sometimes serious, and funny perspective on life, the world of rap music and the city of Atlanta.”

Atlanta revolves around two cousins on their way up through the Atlanta rap scene whose opposing views on art versus commerce, success and race will make their quest anything but easy. Glover will play “Earnest ‘Earn’ Marks,” a college drop-out who reconnects with his long buried ambition and sets out to seize the life he imagined for himself when his estranged cousin becomes a sudden star.

Glover is an award-winning actor and writer best known for playing “Troy” on the Yahoo! (formerly NBC) sitcom Community. As a writer on NBC’s 30 Rock, Glover received a WGA Award for best Comedy Series in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Just last week, Childish Gambino received his first ever Grammy Award nominations, collecting two nominations for Best Rap Album for Because the Internet, and Best Rap Performance for 3005.
