Viki has just announced the premiere date for its upcoming original series Dramaworld, which focuses on a young TV fan (Liv Hewson) who is obsessed with Korean dramas. Soon, she happens to find herself inside of one, in every mega TV watcher’s dream scenario — or is it a nightmare? The 10-episode series will launch April 17th, and will be available for streaming in both English and Korean — an unusual (and smart) hybrid.
Viki is certainly cognizant of pushing into more of that global market, with its CEO Tammy H. Nam saying in a press release that,
“In many ways, ‘Dramaworld’ exemplifies the future of TV: global production partners, an international cast and crew, a storyline written for an international and increasingly mobile audience, and digital-only distribution deals.”
Our own Steve Weintraub got to visit the set of Dramaworld recently in Seoul, and will be posting more about it closer to the premiere, including exclusive video interviews and more. Dramaworld also stars Sean Dulake, Justin Chon, Kim Sa Hee, Bae Noo Ri, and Jimmy Shubert.
Here’s the official synopsis, along with the new poster below:
“Dramaworld” follows Claire Duncan (played by Australian newcomer Liv Hewson), a cute if slightly nerdy 20-year-old college student who’s obsessed with Korean dramas and remains glued to the TV screen at every opportunity, following her favorite leading man, Joon Park (played by Sean Dulake of Korean dramas “Jejungwon” and “Athena: Goddess of War”). Through a twist of fate and a touch of magic, Claire’s world is turned upside down as she finds herself sucked into her favorite show through her smartphone, transporting her into Dramaworld. Claire will soon find out, with a little help from her new friend Seth (played by Justin Chon of “The Twilight Saga” and “21 & Over”), that even she has a role to play in this world.
Nearly every episode will include cameos from well-known K-pop and K-drama stars, including Super Junior’s Siwon Choi, who also stars in “History of the Salaryman,” “King of Dramas,” and “She Was Pretty;” and Han Ji Min, lead actress of “Padam, Padam,” “Rooftop Prince,” “Hyde, Jekyll, Me” and “Plan Man.”
