Looks like that Escape From New York remake is finally happening.  As far as remakes go, this one has had a rather tortured existence, with rights changing hands several times and no one really able to find a script they liked for the project (even though several good scribes had been hired to crack it at different intervals).  The last we'd heard, Charlie Hunnam was one of the front runners to take over for Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, though that was all wishful thinking apparently.  At this point, there is no actor attached to the role.

A silver lining for purists, John Carpenter will be an executive producer on the film.  While that's a common credit for the writer/director of the original film to take, Carpenter will apparently "exert creative influence" over the picture.  Joel Silver no longer appears to be attached (even though he envisioned a trilogy not even a year ago ) now that Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman’s The Picture Company has taken over producing duties. Hit the jump for more on the Escape From New York remake.

Deadline broke the news that Fox had won competitive bidding on the project.  I'll go ahead and skip the usual conjecture about what could go wrong r what could go right.  I love the original Escape From New York and I recognize I live in the real world where remakes happen.  There's always a chance this could be good.  I want all movies to be good.  So let's just pray for that.
