Ms. Marvel is Disney+’s next Marvel original series after Moon Knight that fans have been waiting for since the end of Loki (which has been renewed for Season 2) and Hawkeye. This series will have breakout star Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, the 16-year-old Pakistani-American superhero.

Audiences are extremely excited to see this new Avenger as the next generation of superheroes enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many Marvel super-fans are wondering if the introduction of Ms. Marvel will bring the Young Avengers to the MCU in the near future.

Who is Ms. Marvel?

Kamala Khan, or Ms. Marvel as her superhero identity, is a high school student from Jersey City, New Jersey. She is a huge fan of the Avengers, and one in particular — Captain Marvel. When she discovers her shape-shifting and elongation abilities she decides to take the name “Ms. Marvel” after her idol, Carol Danvers, and finally become a superhero.

Whether her powers will be the same in the TV series is unknown, but so far it seems that she may have a set of powers similar to Captain Marvel. Notably, Kamala Khan is also Marvel’s first-ever Muslim character to headline a Marvel comic book.

Comic Book Origin Story

According to Marvel Comics, Kamala Khan discovers her inhuman genes and takes the name of “Ms. Marvel” at the end of the “Inhumanity” storyline. She currently leads the “Ms. Marvel” series, continuing the “Marvel” line from Carol Danvers.

Her first appearance was “Ms. Marvel” #1 by G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona, Jamie McKelvie, and Sana Amanat. One night, the fallout from Terrigan Mists (a mutagenic substance) created the powers by altering her DNA. She has a similar costume to that of Captain Marvel, and she also wears bangles to celebrate her family and heritage.

Where Does 'Ms. Marvel' Take Place in the MCU Timeline?

There is little information about when and where this series will exactly take place since Kevin Feige said that Vellani’s character will cross over in different Marvel films in the future. As of now, it is clear that it is as modern as possible, most likely being in the same time frame as Hawkeye. This also makes the possibility of the Young Avengers uniting in their own movie or series in the near future even more plausible.

Whether or not that is in the cards is uncertain, though, as many of the original Avengers are still present in the Universe. As of now, the best guess is that Ms. Marvel will be set in modern times, as much present-day as possible.

Upcoming Characters

Iman Vellani cast as Kamala Khan

In addition to Kamala Khan, there are a few disclosed new characters set to appear in Ms. Marvel. In December 2020 Marvel confirmed that Matt Lintz had been cast as Bruno Carrelli, the only high school friend of Kamala Khan. Aramis Knight will play Kareem/Red Dagger, a masked hero who protects the people of Pakistan. Saager Shaikh will play Amir Khan, Kamala Khan’s older brother, and Rish Shah will star as Kamran, Kamala’s crush and close family friend.

Other characters rumored to appear are the Inhumans, The Inventor and Maximus the Mad as villains, and Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers (obviously).

Casting News

In terms of recent casting news, there has not been much new information besides the main actors and characters confirmed for the series. Other actors appearing as Kamala’s family members are Zenobia Shroff (Kamala’s mother) and Mohan Kapur (Kamala’s father).

There have also been several casting announcements for undisclosed roles, including Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, Azhar Usman, Travina Springer, Nimra Bucha, Alyy Khan, Alysia Reiner, Fawad Khan, Mehwish Hayat, and Anjali Bhimani.

What Does Captain Marvel Have to Do with Ms. Marvel?

Many believe that Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) herself will make an appearance as a “super-mentor” to Kamala Khan in the new Disney+ series. It should be understood that Ms. Marvel is by no means replacing Captain Marvel or is “the next” Captain Marvel. Instead, Ms. Marvel will stand as her own character.

Captain Marvel serves as the inspiration for Kamala Khan’s superhero identity and name, as well as being her personal idol. It is important to note, though, that it is highly likely that a collaboration between the two will be present in the series, and even an appearance by Monica Rambeau (the daughter of Carol Danver’s best friend).
