The Disney animation-to-live-action craze continues. Not only is there the Tinker Bell movie with Reese WitherspoonThe Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, DumboMulan, Winnie the PoohPinocchio and a twist on Jack and the Beanstalk in the works, but now the studio also has a live-action project based on the Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia in early development too.

As reported by THR, Dracula Untold and The Last Witch Hunter scribes, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, are locked to pen the script and will produce the film as well. According to the outlet’s sources, the live-action rendition of Night on Bald Mountain will be similar to what the studio did with Maleficent.

If you’ve seen the Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia, you know that the possibilities are endless as far as a feature narrative goes, although the fact that THR’s sources liken it to Maleficent makes me think that Sazama and Sharpless could have an anti-hero/misunderstood villain at the center of it, probably Chernabog, the demon that summons all the ghosts in the film.

No matter what approach the duo takes, there’s no doubt that a live-action Night on Bald Mountain will come with a wealth of opportunities to deliver some stunning visuals. Yes, Disney definitely might be overdoing it when it comes to turning animated classics into live-action features, but at least Night on Bald Mountain has a good deal of wiggle room as far as the story goes and could perhaps tap into the Slavic mythology a bit more.
