The annual Austin-based genre festival Hoo boy, it was a bit of a wait for the Fantastic Fest final wave this year, but it does not disappoint. The annual Austin-based genre festival is already packing a lineup of heavy hitter world premieres, including Bad Robot’s Overlord and Gareth EvansApostle, but the final wave comes in swinging with a roster of buzzy titles off the festival wave.

The Big One is Bad Times at the El Royale, Drew Goddard’s action comedy, which has easily been one of the most-wished-for titles in the Fantastic Fest social media sphere and takes the slot as the closing night film. Other exciting new additions include Karyn Kusama’s crime thriller Destroyer and Jonah Hill’s Mid90s, both of which premiered at TIFF to strong reviews, It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s neo-noir followup Under the Silver Lake, and Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

The final wave also brings word of a Halloween themed opening night party, an appearance from Tenacious D, and a lecture from The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies entitled “Ghouls to the Front: Rethinking Women's Horror Filmmaking,” which will see Alexandra Heller-Nicholas “exploring examples from around the world from 1898 to 2018 of women’s horror filmmaking finding ways we can collectively rethink the history of horror more broadly to be more inclusive, more representative, and more fun.”
