20th Century Fox is pushing its Fantastic Four reboot release date back a couple of months.  Directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle), the film was originally scheduled to hit theaters on June 16, 2015, but Fox has now opted to move the pic to August 7, 2015.  While August doesn’t necessarily seem like better real estate than June for the summer movie season, Disney had massive success in slating Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy for the beginning of August this year, which benefitted from the dearth of quality films throughout the rest of the month.  The Fantastic Four will now square off against the all-ages horror comedy Goosebumps with Jack Black, but what of Fox’s other film that was slated for release on August 7th?  Well the studio has now pulled Assassin’s Creed from the schedule entirely, giving it a “TBD” release date.

Hit the jump for more, including a release date shift for the John Green adaptation Paper Towns.

Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot has had a rather curious production.  While most studios would have released something by now for a film with such a high profile, we’ve yet to see even an official logo from The Fantastic Four.  The film bypassed Comic-Con entirely this summer, but with this new release date I guess they could make a brief appearance next year before the film’s release.  It definitely has a solid cast with Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell as the titular foursome and Toby Kebbell as Dr. Doom, so here’s hoping the release date shift is just Fox wanting to capitalize on the Guardians date and not an indication of larger issues.

As for Assassin’s Creed, the fact that the video game adaptation has been pulled from the schedule entirely isn’t a great sign.  Michael Fassbender is attached to produce and star in the film, and his Macbeth director Justin Kurzel entered talks to take the helm a couple of months ago.  Other than that, though, movement on the picture has been incredibly slow, and I guess Fox realized the film would not be going into production anytime soon.  There’s no official word that it’s completely dead, but a “TBD” release date on a big property like this doesn’t bode well.  Hopefully the film gets back on track with Fassbender still onboard.

Additionally, after casting its two leads in Nat Wolff and Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina), Fox 2000’s adaptation of the John Green novel Paper Towns is being moved up from July 31, 2015 to June 19th, Fantastic Four's old release date.  Green, obviously, is the author behind this year’s smashing success The Fault in Our Stars, and this new release date tracks quite closely with when Fault bowed this summer.  Robot and Frank director Jake Schreier is set to helm the film, and Fox is no doubt hoping the small-budget dramedy will do big business just like Fault.
