Fox Searchlight has released a new Far from the Madding Crowd trailer for director Thomas Vinterberg’s (The Hunt) adaptation of the classic Thomas Hardy novel. The romantic drama stars Carey Mulligan as a young, independent woman who inherits a fortune and then becomes the target of three very different suitors: a sheep farmer (Matthias Schoenaerts), a reckless Sergeant (Tom Sturridge), and a prosperous bachelor (Michael Sheen). This looks to be a captivating film that’s not only emotionally involving, but also visually fetching. Mulligan also appears to be delivering a swell performance (no surprise there), and I’m eager to see how the adaptation plays out on the big screen.

Here’s the official synopsis for Far From the Madding Crowd:

The film tells the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
