There’s been talk of additional Fast & Furious films since Donna Langley announced the possibility of three more installments back in October and now that Furious 7 has accumulated a whopping $406.3 million worldwide, there’s no doubt Universal will make Fast & Furious 8, Fast 8 or whatever they’re going to call it a priority.

However, producer Neal Moritz told THR that they aren’t making any moves just yet:

"Honestly, we're just bathing in the success of this. We’ll probably get together in a week or so to talk.”

According to THR’s sources, the plan is to make a total of 10 films as Langley suggested back in October, but at the moment, there’s no writer or director attached for the next installment. However, as the outlet points out, that’s never stopped a Fast and Furious film from moving forward before. Apparently these movies are made in reverse. Universal sets the release date and then Vin Diesel starts working on the story with Moritz, Chris Morgan and a director. But, if THR’s prediction pans out and Universal announces a Furious 8 release date at CinemaCon in late April, they’re going to have to lock in a director soon enough.

Justin Lin is busy working on Star Trek 3, so he’s out, but apparently James Wan is still a possibility. When Wan first joined the franchise, he signed a two-picture option, but after all of the scheduling changes due to Paul Walker’s passing, Universal gave him the go-head to make The Conjuring 2 with Warner Bros. That movie is expected to go into production in October, so there is a chance Universal might wait for him. But, of course, the studio could wind up going with someone else and apparently they’re getting lots of calls from agents.

As for the cast, folks including Dwayne Johnson work on a film-by-film basis, so Universal will have to deal with them when the time comes. Some have options that have expired and will need to be renegotiated, but there are others that are still in place. Luke Evans only popped up in Furious 7 for a super short comatose moment, but THR’s sources claim that he does have an option with Universal for another movie. However, it doesn’t have to be a Fast and Furious movie. There’s also that rumor that Eva Mendes could return to the franchise as US Customs Agent Monica Fuentes. She was in 2 Fast 2 Furious and also appeared in the Fast Five post-credits scene as well.

Who knows if the rumor about the New York setting for Furious 8 is true, but one thing we do know for sure is that Moritz knows it’s important to keep raising the bar:

“[The story] is going to have to be something enticing for all of us. It has to be as good as or better [than Furious 7].”
