A female football movie?  Laura Dern and Judd Apatow caught got my attention with that!  It’s being reported that Dern came up with an idea for a comedy about obsessive female football fans and that Apatow is helping her develop it for Universal.  Hamlet 2 and Hot Rod scribe Pam Brady is penning the script, but other than that, we don’t know much more about the project.

It wouldn’t come as a surprise if Dern winds up scoring a role in the film, but right now she’s only set to produce alongside Barry Mendel and Apatow on behalf of Apatow Productions.  Hit the jump for more.

So there’s not really much more to the Variety article, but it is a fun idea to think about.  Thanks to Apatow’s involvement, my mind immediately goes to Bridesmaids with football.  And really, if this group of football-loving females winds up consisting of Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Ellie Kemper, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rose Byrne and/or Melissa McCarthy, I’d be even more pumped about the project.

But no matter who snags the main roles, we just need more female-led sports movies out there.  In fact, off the top of my head I can only name eight – A League of Their Own, Million Dollar Baby, Bend It Like Beckham, Gracie, She’s the Man, Whip It, Blue Crush and Eddie.  (Eddie counts, right?)  As a woman who loves to watch and play sports, that’s pretty disappointing.  It doesn’t sound like the leads of Dern and Apatow’s movie will be playing much football, but having fun celebrating a sport in any capacity on screen would make me happy.
