The Fifty Shades of Grey sequel, Fifty Shades Darker, just got its February 10, 2017 release date one week ago, but the very first teaser trailer for the film has already surfaced. While it does feel insanely unnecessary to be promoting this thing nearly two full years ahead of its release, I’ve got to admit, it is a simple and effective tease.

Fifty Shades author E.L. James didn’t wind up getting her way and scoring the job to pen the sequel script, but her husband Niall Leonard did. While at The Hollywood Reporter's Power Lawyers breakfast, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley noted that Leonard “actually did a draft that wasn't credited on the first movie, and he did a really good job.” Langley also pointed out that the Fifty Shades sequel will be “more of a thriller.”

I’m not going to spoil anything here, but if you’re at all familiar with what goes down in Fifty Shades Darker the book, it’s easy to see why Langley could dub it “more of a thriller.” However, if you don’t know anything about the source material, don’t get all hyped that the sequel is leaving the romance behind for 007-style thrills. There’s certainly more tension and suspense than the first book, but I wouldn’t call it a thriller.

Check out the new Fifty Shades Darker teaser below, which, according to The Playlist, is the teaser that will come with the Fifty Shades of Grey DVD and Blu-ray due out on May 8th. Fifty Shades Darker hits theaters just in time for Valentine’s Day 2017 and then Fifty Shades Freed will follow on February 9, 2018.
