Fifty Shades of Grey is expected to be 2015’s first box office heavy (American Sniper counts as a holdover from 2014), and it broke out big on its opening night release. According to Deadline, the movie pulled in $8.6 million, which is the second-highest opening night gross for an R-rated film (the current record holder is The Hangover Part II, which made $10.4 million).
What’s more surprising is that the movie is Universal’s biggest opening night ever; the erotic romance flick beat out Fast & Furious 6‘s $6.5 million gross. However, Universal is poised to have a big year with Furious 7, Pitch Perfect 2, Jurassic World, and Ted 2, so we’ll see how long Fifty Shades can hold the record.
The movie is currently on track to clear $50 million over the four-day weekend, although some analysts think it could go higher than $60 million. That’s a good haul for a bad movie.
