Prepare for a (possibly acid-fueled) trip down memory lane, folks. The Fraggle Rock movie has gained some serious momentum by way of a star. Variety reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to lead New Regency’s live-action feature film resurrection of the Jim Henson franchise. The Fraggle Rock TV series debuted in 1983 with the intent of airing the show all around the world, unlike Henson’s Sesame Street franchise which was geared towards U.S. audiences. The story revolved around adorable/terrifying creatures who lived in a system of caves called “Fraggle Rock”, with Henson’s brilliant team of puppeteers bringing the characters to life. The three main creatures were the Fraggles, the Gorgs, and the Doozers.

The Henson Co. and Lisa Henson are producing the Fraggle Rock movie with New Regency, and in a statement to Variety, Gordon-Levitt expressed his enthusiasm for the property:

“The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on Sesame Street and then on Fraggle Rock. Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood.”

Gordon-Levitt has been incredibly busy as of late, most recently reteaming with 50/50 director Jonathan Levine and star Seth Rogen in an untitled X-Mas project, which was preceded by a starring role in Robert Zemeckis’ upcoming 3D drama The Walk, in which he plays high-wire artist Philippe Petit. He is currently shooting the role of Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone’s new film Snowden.

A Fraggle Rock movie has been in the works for a while now, and Montecito Pictures is no longer involved, but Gordon-Levitt’s commitment puts the film that much closer to becoming a reality. All together now, “Cast your cares away…”
