For those who have been keeping an eye on British cinema over the last decade or so, the name Ben Wheatley is probably very well known. Beginning with Down Terrace, his pitch-black comedy centered on a small crime family in the English countryside, Wheatley has directed some of the most beguiling, bloody, and remarkable action-oriented whatsits of the last few years, including this year's High-Rise, a J.G. Ballard adaptation.

Next up for the director is Free Fire, an explosive look at a gun deal that goes terribly wrong, which just premiered at Toronto International Film Festival to quite a positive reception. Now, we have the first two trailers (red and green band) for the crazed, high-octane spectacle, which stars Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, and Cillian Murphy as key players in the big deal. And if the story didn't already suggest his mighty influence, the trailers certainly give you a clear idea of why Martin Scorsese decided to come on as an executive producer for Wheatley's latest. There's quite a lot going on in this trailer and almost all of it involves gunfire, explosions, and things that look extremely painful. Whether or not Wheatley will be able to summon the same rueful criticism of such violence as Scorsese has so often done is something we'll have to wait to find out when A24 releases the film next year.

Here's how Deadline described the plot of Free Fire:

Set in late 70s Boston, the film stars Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Jack Reynor and Sam Riley. Larson plays Justine, a woman who has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Murphy, Smiley) and a gang led by Vernon (Copley) and Ord (Hammer) who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired in the handover, a heart-stopping game of survival ensues.
