Blame it on the World Series, Halloween, the Presidential Election, or maybe just some nice weather where everyone is going outside instead, but this is shaping up to be a paltry weekend at the box office. An appetite for Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code novels being adapted into movies has flamed out with Inferno, which collected under $1 million on Thursday night, and hobbled to $5.6 million on Friday. And yet, those numbers are enough for it to grab the number one spot.

Inferno, starring Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones, was made with half of the budget of Angels & Demons, and doesn't seem like it will be recouping more than a portion of that movie's box office gains as well. But as is becoming an increasingly familiar story, though Inferno is not performing well domestically, it's burning up overseas where it has already reached over $100 million. American audiences may not be the target of some of these mega franchises anymore (and perhaps that's a good thing?)

Back in 2009, Angels & Demons made $46 million in its opening weekend, while The Da Vinci Code made $77 million (both opened in May). Inferno is on track to make around $15 million this weekend.

Coming in second place is last week's winner, Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween, which is proving to be a fairly formidable foe for Inferno, and it could be neck-in-neck to finish out the weekend, as it gained a pretty solid $4.5 million on Friday (and is, of course, relevant to this particular seasonal weekend).

While A Madea Halloween is seeing around a 47% drop from its opening weekend, Jack Reacher: Never Stop Never Stopping Go Back is seeing around a $60% drop, and earned a mere $2.9 million on Friday, putting it in third place.
