The moral of the Summer 2016 Box Office story appears to be “Be an Animated Movie.” Illumination Entertainment and Universal’s animated feature The Secret Life of Pets opened yesterday with a huge $38.3 million at the box office, and is now on track for a weekend total upwards of $96 million. That’s a hefty number that many other summer blockbusters will certainly be jealous of, and would solidify Secret Life of Pets as the biggest original animated feature opening ever, besting Pixar’s Inside Out which netted $90.4 million on its opening weekend. Moreover, with an A- CinemaScore, this thing will no doubt have legs and keep climbing up the charts in the weeks to come.

Illumination has now firmly announced itself as an animation powerhouse, with last year’s Minions grossing over $1 billion worldwide and the preceding feature, Despicable Me 2, hitting $970 million. Each was a huge step up from 2012’s The Lorax, which grossed $348 million worldwide in the wake of Despicable Me’s $543 million. And the studio has no plans of slowing down, with the musical Sing on tap for this Christmas and Despicable Me 3 and How the Grinch Stole Christmas on the docket.

Elsewhere in new releases, the comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates earned a solid $6.6 million on Friday, which puts it on track for a respectable $17 million opening weekend. Holding strong is Finding Dory with $6.2 million on Friday, and surprisingly The Legend of Tarzan is showing some legs with $6.1 million on Friday and a weekend in the $20 million range, which could be enough to bump Dory down to the #3 slot when all is said and done.

One of the summer’s biggest disappointments continues to be Steven Spielberg’s fantasy adaptation The BFG, which is tumbling hard in its second week with a mere $2.3 million on Friday for a weekend total around $7.8 million, which is a shame because the movie is actually really sweet. I say again, let’s stop taking Steven Spielberg for granted.
