Unbeknownst to all but the most die-hard Fast and Furious fans, the 2001 remake of The Fast and the Furious was inspired by a 1998 Vibe article which chronicled the illegal street races of customized Japanese compacts zooming up and down New York City streets. The culture surrounding the high-speed drag races actually began in Southern California in the 90s, which is part of the reason that Rob Cohen's 2001 film was set in and around Los Angeles. But as franchise star Vin Diesel revealed last night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonFurious 8 will indeed be taking place in New York City.

Diesel appeared on the talk show in order to promote his new film The Last Witch Hunter, but talk quickly turned to the Fast and Furious franchise. He not only revealed the location of Furious 8, but also proudly confirmed that F. Gary Gray would be directing the film. Diesel then commented briefly on the new trilogy of Furious films before schooling the audience on the Vibe article that kicked off the whole thing almost 20 years ago.
