A new trailer for the upcoming apocalyptic thriller Future World has been released, and it must be seen to be believed. Directed by James Franco and Bruce Thierry Cheung, the film stars Jeffrey Wahlberg as a young man who must traverse a desert wasteland to find a near-mythical medicine that will save his mother’s (Lucy Liu) life. Along the way he crosses paths with an evil Warlord played by James Franco, the Warlord’s robot sex slave Ash (Suki Waterhouse), and a ruthless Druglord (Milla Jovovich). It’s, uh, a lot of things.
This movie was shot back in 2016, before Franco put a self-imposed moratorium on trying to tackle multiple things at one time. That change led to some of the best work of his career with The Disaster Artist and HBO’s The Deuce. This movie, well, it’s hard to tell if it’s intentionally being ridiculous and silly, or if it really wants to be taken seriously as a unique apocalyptic thriller. It’s anything but unique, and if it didn’t have this A-list cast the whole thing would read like a cheap Mad Max: Fury Road knock-off. I mean it still kind of does, but with movie stars.
Anyway, take a look at the Future World trailer below for yourself. The film also stars Snoop Dogg, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, George Lewis Jr., and Margarita Levieva. Future World will be released in select theaters and on iTunes and Amazon on May 25th.
