If there’s one thing for sure, it’s that the next few years are going to be the home of multiple franchises. We’ve gathered a list of the most exciting sequels that are set to be made over the next few years—including a few that are mainly ideas, but we hope are in the pipeline. Will your favorite movie be getting another installment this year?

The Accountant 2 - Speculation

When The Accountant was released in 2016, Ben Affleck and the rest of the cast received positive reviews and huge monetary success. The film brought in $155.1 million globally, while it was created on a $44 million budget.

With the hype of the first film, there was immediate gossip of a second film in the works. There has been talk amongst audiences claiming that they would love to see the character from the original movie brought back for another, and it seems Affleck is willing to reprise the role once more.

Director Gavin O’ Connor spoke on a potential sequel back in 2016 with Cinema Blend saying, “In the second one, if we’re ever fortunate to do it, I keep having this idea of a Catcher in the Rye kind of thing. He’s surrounded by children, dealing with slavery and... things like that...If there’s a way to deal with that subject matter and him saving children, that’s something I’d really be interested in doing.”

Sounds pretty dark.

Coming To America 2 - In Production

When Eddie Murphy hinted at a possible sequel on Twitter, social media fans went into an uproar. Almost immediately after, Murphy deleted the tweet. However, as we all know, nothing is ever really deleted off the internet, and there is still proof of Murphy’s words floating in the cyber atmosphere.

A few months after, (once everyone had simmered down), 50/50 director Jonathon Levine confirmed that there was indeed a sequel in the works. The writers for the sequel told ABC that the storyline would follow Eddie Murphy’s character as he searches for his American son.

Murphy has remained quiet on the subject since sparking the social media storm.

The Rocketeer - In Production

90’s kids, where you at?!

There’s a good chance you remember The Rocketeer if you were around when Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Terminator 2: Judgment Day were released.

Unfortunately, these big box office hits overshadowed The Rocketeer,  which was considered to be a disappointment at the box office, grossing only $46 million on a $35 million budget.

Disney, (the king of resurrecting dead films) is looking to bring the cult franchise back to life two decades later.

The revived concept centers on an African American woman attempting to take the rocketeer jetpack during the Cold War. This will then spark a cat and mouse chase between her and a mad scientist, who is trying to use the technology for an evil scheme.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 - Speculation

The first film that starred Tom Cruise saw his character—William Cage—thrown into a time loop during a vicious (and probably painful) fight with invincible aliens who want to destroy the earth. With each day he has to relive the battle, his combat skills improve, and he finds himself getting better with each round. Don’t remember it? That’s ok.

Although critics sang high praises for the film, it wasn’t really a hit when it was first released in 2014. You’ve probably seen it recently on your favorite streaming service, where it has since gained popularity five years after it appeared in theaters.

Some rumors began forming two years after its release that there was a sequel in the process, but we haven’t heard anything since.

47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter - In Production

Look, some people just can’t get enough of the shark horror genre, ok? There, I said it.

In 2017, 47 Meters Down was created with a budget of $5 million and wound up with a gross of $44 million domestically. With that kind of return, it’s pretty apparent that there’s a sequel in the queue.

When two sisters are invited by strangers to watch sharks from a diving cage, they are hesitant, but they go.

The sisters then lie and tell them they are experienced divers (because how could that go wrong) and get into a rusty diving cage and head down. The chain breaks, leaving them (you guessed it) 47 meters below surrounded by sharks.

The Next Chapter’s director promises audiences that the sequel of the film will give a fresh take on this genre, comparing it to The Descent, but underwater.

Men in Black International - Being Released Soon

Let’s get this out of the way first. No, unfortunately, Will Smith will not be returning for the fourth film in the franchise. Also, before you ask, neither will Tommy Lee Jones. The new movie will be introducing a whole new cast including Liam Neeson, Chris Hemsworth, and Tessa Thompson.

The film, released by Sony Pictures on June 14, 2019, is said to be the reboot of the year. With the filming taking place in New York, Morocco, Italy, and London, we look forward to seeing the suit-wearing alien fighters on the big screen again in this new twist on the story.

Bill and Ted Face The Music - Being Released Soon

Yes, our heroes will return once more for the third installment of the Bill and Ted saga. With the film set to begin production in 2019, we are likely to see the film make its way onto the big screen by August 21, 2020.

Bill and Ted must now go on another adventure prompted by a visit from a future caller. The future visitor warns the pair that only their song can bring harmony to the universe. The plot thickens as the friends now go into overdrive to finish the Wyld Stallyns song that is prophesied to save the world.

Top Gun: Maverick - Being Released Soon

Although teasers were hinting a sequel to the beloved 80s film would take place July 12, 2019, it has been pushed back to June 26, 2020. The reason for the push back was because filmmakers are hoping to ‘wow’ audiences with intense flight scenes and sequences.

In the sequel, Val Kilmer will make a return as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky alongside Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Jay Ellis, Bashir Salahuddin, Danny Ramirez, Monica Barbaro, and, of course, Tom Cruise.

On May 30, 2018, filming was confirmed when Cruise posted a photo on Twitter featuring Ray-Bans and his original Maverick helmet with the words “Feel the Need” across the middle.

There’s only one question we have: Is there ANY way we can bring back Goose?!

We’re Wolves - Speculation

With a TV show on FX as of March, What We Do In The Shadows is getting a lot of love from the media right now. Recently, there has been talk of a sequel in the works which would center on werewolves instead of vampires.

Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement have been wanting to do a sequel for years, with Waititi telling Bloody-Disgusting.com “we always had plans to make another movie, but other things, Thor, got in the way of our plans to make a werewolf movie and we keep talking about it.” In 2017, Taika Waititi received high praise for his role in directing Thor: Ragnarok.

District 10 - Speculation

With the success following District 9, it seems that everyone has been awaiting the announcement of a sequel, and 10 years later ... we’re still waiting. District 9 met all the criteria necessary to spark the makings of a sequel, but it has yet to be confirmed.

Although director Neill Blomkamp has expressed his interest and has even started working on a possible sequel, there are other factors that are causing the delay. During a Reddit AMA, he told fans, “the issue right now is that I have many other projects and ideas that I also want to work on and complete … and most importantly, the exact REASON to make district 10 needs to be very clear.”

Unfortunately, it could be another ten years before we see any progress on this front.

Beetlejuice 2 - Speculation

Tim Burton made mention to a possible sequel while on the set of Dark Shadows. After the original film made millions, a new film Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian was mentioned, but never went into production. Back in 2015, Winona Ryder briefly touched on a sequel, and then it was never mentioned again.

The possibility of a sequel was brought up again in 2017 when Deadline reported that a screenwriter was hired to write a script for the upcoming 30th anniversary of the film followed by silence, again.

When the Beetlejuice story made its way onto Broadway, there was once again hope restored in a possible second part to the film. Unfortunately, it seems Burton began humming a different tune than before when USA Today asked him about the sequel, and he responded with, “I don’t know. I doubt it.”

Master and Commander 2 - Speculation

Whispers of a sequel to the Academy Award-winning film began in 2017, when Russell Crowe sent out a suspicious tweet saying that he was preparing for a “second voyage.” This news was followed by a frenzy as many movie-goers collectively agree that Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a film fully deserving of a sequel.

Although the film made $212 million at the box office with a budget of $150 million, it was rewarded with 10 Oscar nominations; winning Best Cinematography and Sound Editing. Ever since Russell Crowe tweeted at fans to “let @20thcenturyfox know of your pleasure,” it seems the only ones who need convincing now is 20th Century Fox, now owned by Disney.

Den of Thieves 2 - Speculation

In 2018, it was announced that Gerard Butler, Tucker Tooley, Mark Canton, Alan Siegel, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and director Christian Gudegast are in cahoots for another heist. Although O’Shea Jackson Jr. is still in negotiations, the sequel will feature Big Nick, (Butler) on Donnie’s, (Jackson Jr.) trail.

This sequel will take place in the streets of Europe, and the thieves are plotting a crime against the world’s biggest diamond exchange, inspired by the Antwerp diamond exchange heist of 2003.

The original film, Den of Thieves, overcompensated at the box office, leading STXFilms to begin working on a sequel, much to the delight of fans. The date of the sequel has yet to be released, but the premise already shows promise.

McClane - Speculation

The rumors are true: We’re getting the A Good Day To Die Hard sequel that we didn’t ask for. Well, to be honest, McClane will actually be more of a prequel to the original Die Hard, and in 2016, director Len Wiseman told slashfilm.com that Willis would make an appearance in the new film. Although the screenplay is complete, the power to OK the film is in Disney’s hands.

McClane Die Hard Sequel

The film explores John McClane during his 20s, and the story will flash between a young McClane and his older self. With Willis’ recent return to the finale of the Unbreakable franchise as we saw in M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, it seems as though Willis is open for a new project.

Unfortunately, there has been no news on the McClane progress. Sorry, die-hard fans of Die Hard.

Doctor Sleep - Being Released Soon

You’re certainly living life on the edge when you decide to make a sequel to a classic, but it seems that this one actually shows promise. The film is based on the novel, Doctor Sleep by Stephen King, which is a written sequel to The Shining. This sequel, which is said to be released late 2019, will star Ewan McGregor as a grown-up Danny Torrance, who is still trying to put his traumatic past behind him using the numbing effects of alcohol.

In his attempts to get sober, he awakens his “shining powers” from the first film, and meets a young girl who also has supernatural abilities while working at a hospice center.

McGregor has confirmed that unlike the first film directed by Stanley Kubrick, Doctor Sleep will be on par with the novel. Mike Flanagan, the sequel’s director, has become a fan of the horror film genre after directing Oculus, Hush, and Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard - In Production

Try saying this title five times fast!

In 2020, we will see Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds reprise their hilarious roles from the original film. As seen from Samuel L. Jackson’s Instagram posts, it looks like some of the filming will take place in Croatia, which is where HBO films much of Game of Thrones.

Alongside Jackson and Reynolds will be Salma Hayek, Richard E. Grant, Antonio Banderas, Frank Grillo, and Tom Hopper.

Back in 2017, The Hitman’s Bodyguard made $176.6 million worldwide with a $30 million budget, which almost immediately warrants a sequel.

Chicken Run 2 - Being Released Soon

When Chicken Run was released in 2000, it broke records and earned the title of the highest grossing stop-motion movies ever made. After an 18-year wait, the announcement of a sequel to the original chicken film came as quite a shock to audiences.

chicken-run-sequel1

Your memory may be a bit hazy, so we’ll remind you that the first film focused on a group of chickens. The main characters, Rocky and Ginger, tried everything to escape the evil Mrs. Tweedy, who was intent on turning her farm into a chicken pot pie factory.

Like most children’s movies, it has a fairly dark plot.

The sequel will follow the new Shaun the Sheep installment set to be released late 2019, although it has not been confirmed if members of the original cast will return to voice their characters in the sequel.

Bright 2 - Speculation

Bright was one of Netflix’s first films released with an exceedingly large budget. The film cost producers $100 million to create and brought in 11 million viewers upon its release on the streaming site.

The film stars Will Smith as an LAPD police officer who goes head-to-head with racism and police corruption to protect an elf girl who wields a magic wand.

Although the film was cast aside by critics, it garnered relatively positive reviews from viewers. The sequel will be written and directed by David Ayer, known for directing films such as Suicide Squad and Fury. There has been no word on when the film will begin production, and there is no set release date.

Bad Boys for Life - In Production

Bad boys, bad boys, whatchu gonna do?

When Bad Boys 2 was released in 2003, fans left the theaters kicking and screaming for a third installment. Well, it finally seems like your wish is their command, as Bad Boys For Life is said to hit theaters in 2020, rumored to have been in production since 2009.

The film will once again feature Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprising their roles as detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett.

In 2009, Sony hired Peter Craig to write the script, and Joe Carnahan was locked in to direct in 2015. However, Carnahan had to leave the film two years later due to scheduling conflicts, and a year later new directors signed on to the project.

The cast and crew have since been tight-lipped about the plot since the beginning of production.

Space Jam 2 - In Production

We can all probably agree that this one will both infuriate and intrigue audiences. For many ’90s kids, Space Jam holds a special place in their hearts, and although they asked for a sequel, many feel as though it is too late to make one.

Although Michael Jordan will not be making an appearance in this sequel, his replacement is a legend in his own right: the Looney toons will be joining forces with none other than LeBron James.

Although the film is set to be released in 2021, LeBron is having a hard time gathering some NBA peers to join the project.

Since the original film is based on the “Hare Jordan” commercial by Nike, players who have shoe deals with other companies may not be able to take part in the filming. Without real-life NBA players, the film could lose the spark and appeal that the first film had.

The Passion of the Christ: The Resurrection - In Production

Released in 2004, The Passion of the Christ is the highest grossing R-rated film ever to hit the silver screen with $611 million worldwide. The film focuses on the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life and ends with mention of his resurrection, which is where the sequel is said to pick up.

Jim Caviezel has confirmed that he will reprise his role as Jesus in the film, telling USA Today, “There are things that I cannot say that will shock the audience. It’s great. Stay tuned.”

Although it is unclear exactly what the film will be about, Mel Gibson, who will be directing the sequel, has mentioned that it will focus less on Christ, and more on the people around him. Looks like there are big plans for this next installment of the biblical drama film.

Murder on the Orient Express 2: Death on the Nile - In Production

The sequel to Murder on the Orient Express was set to be released on the same day as Star Wars: Episode IX, December 20, 2019, but setbacks caused by the Disney-Fox merger forced the film to change its release date to October 2, 2020.

Although the film was met with mixed reviews from critics, it earned $352 million worldwide on a budget of $55 million, meaning that the film is considered a great success.

With an all-star cast including Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, and Josh Gad, it’s no wonder the original film brought in such a large crowd. For this new installment, it will feature an entirely new cast, and it is rumored that Gal Gadot was one of the first actors to sign on to the production.

Call Me By Your Name 2 - Speculation

Call Me By Your Name brought audiences to tears when it was released in 2017, and earned an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Director Luca Guadagnino has confirmed that he has started working on a sequel, but where will this next chapter go story-wise?

Call Me By Your Name Sequel

Although there is no official release date, there are speculations that the film will take us a few years into the future to check in with Elio. Guadagnino hinted that the sequel will follow Elio as he deals with hardships during that time period such as The Gulf War, AIDS, and the fall of the Soviet Union.

Ugh, get your tissues ready, everyone.

Gladiator 2 - Speculation

You asked, and so you shall receive!

Now we know what you’re saying, “buuuuut Maximus died at the end, how can a sequel be made?” The industry reports that the second film will focus on Lucilla’s son, Lucius.

Although Maximus isn’t physically in the movie, there will still be sprinkles of his influence shown throughout the storyline.

Image via DreamWorks/Universal Pictures/Scott Free Productions

The sequel is moving at quite a fast pace, with Paramount joining forces with original director, Ridley Scott, and screenwriter Peter Craig, who wrote The Town and Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2. Although the casting for the new film hasn’t been announced, there are rumors that news about casting potentials may be released soon.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil - Being Released Soon

Disney is likely anxious to make a sequel of this film seeing as it earned $750 million at the box office. It has been confirmed that Angelina Jolie will be returning to play the title character joined by Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville, who will be making appearances in the sequel as their characters.

The film will be directed by Joachim Rønning, who is known for co-directing Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Lies.

With a name like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, we can only wonder what magnificent tale we’ll be receiving this time around.

Angel Has Fallen - Being Released Soon

The third installment of the Olympus Has Fallen chapter is ready to go August 23, 2019. Once again, we will see Gerard Butler play Secret Service agent Mike Banning, who, in the third film, is being framed for the assassination of the president.

Olympus Has Fallen Sequel

Angel Has Fallen will feature an A-list cast, including Morgan Freeman, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Nick Nolte, Danny Huston, Piper Perabo, and Tim Blake Nelson.

When the first film, Olympus Has Fallen, was released, it made $170.3 million worldwide. It’s sequel, London Has Fallen, took in $205.9 million globally. It makes sense for FilmDistrict to want to capitalize on this significant opportunity. If the third film is anything like the last two, then we better get amped up for a fast-paced action thriller.

Avatar 2, 3, 4 & 5 - In Production

Avatar was all the rage when it came out in 2009, and even earned the title as the highest grossing film of all time. Luckily, we’re getting more than we bargained for, as James Cameron is planning on making four different films but will be filming them all at the same time.

avatar-sequel
Image via Twentieth Century Fox

Delays of the films were due to intense technical projects that needed more input. The goal of these projects is to create a new technology that will allow them to capture a new kind of 3D experience unlike any other feat in motion capture history.

The planned release is set for December 18, 2020, which will mark eleven years after the release of the first film. The following films are set to be released anywhere between 2021 and 2025.

Zombieland: Double Tap - Being Released Soon

Zombieland: Double Tap will be the sequel to Zombieland, and apparently, has been a long time coming. Talks of a sequel began during the release of the first installment in 2009. The idea was in limbo for a few years until it was finally confirmed in July 2018.

Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin are all set to appear in the October 11, 2019 sequel.

Zombieland Sequel DoubleTap

The storyline revolves around our four heroes taking on evolved zombies once more and meeting new human survivors along the way.

Although the zombie genre has somewhat fallen off the map, it will be interesting to see their take on the genre for the sequel almost a decade after the first film.

World War Z 2 - Speculation

When the original World War Z was released in 2013, there were immediate plans to make a sequel. There was a point when a sequel was scheduled for release in 2017, but scheduling conflicts set back production. The new date was set to be March 2019, but Paramount has since paused the film’s production.

World War Z Sequel Brad Pitt

There is now no word on whether film production will continue, or if it will be put on a permanent hiatus. Brad Pitt has been on board to appear as his character Gerry Lane in the sequel. In May 2016, Mireille Enos confirmed that she would also return as his wife, Karin Lane.

Currently, there are no other castings confirmed, and there is no news on the production of the project.

The Suicide Squad - In Production

The sequel to Suicide Squad seems to be a big priority for Warner Bros, as they brought in Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn to take the project under his wing.

The film was initially called Suicide Squad 2, but has since changed to The Suicide Squad.

Suicide Squad Sequel

The original film was not loved by critics, and it faced some backlash, but the sequel is hoping to fix these issues. The goal in adding James Gunn is to give the movie some of the ‘80s vibes that played out successfully in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

The Suicide Squad film will open on August 6, 2021, which is the same date Guardians of the Galaxy was released 7 years prior.
