20 ‘Game of Thrones’ Character Posters Are a Reminder of Who Remains Alive

     February 28, 2019

Throughout most of its run, HBO has released Game of Thrones posters that tease, say, faces of death or who might sit on the Iron Throne. The posters for the show’s eight and final season really double as both; it’s a reminder of the more minor characters you might have temporarily forgotten about during the hiatus, which is also to say “here’s a list of people who will probably be dead soon.” Not necessarily but … probably. And with each sitting on the Iron Throne in these promo images, it’s a nod to the fact that the game is still afoot, and nothing is certain.

In addition to the character posters below, each was tweeted out with a character tagline, which is worth breaking down:

Daenerys Targaryen: “My reign has just begun.” — And if you keep losing your dragons to the Night King, it may soon end…

Jon Snow: “We know no king, but the King in the North.” — Fans have long speculated that the series could end with Jon and his aunt Dany on the Iron Throne, being a combination of Ice and Fire. The North will likely be key (as it has always been) in keeping the Night King at bay, so Jon’s words could be referring to the fact that Westeros will be saved by the North … or undone by it.

Cersei Lannister: “Long may she reign.” — Well this one we know is going to end probably in spectacular fashion (no Lannister dies without flare), and these words and pretty damning.

Jaime Lannister: “There are no men like me. Only me.” — Jaime’s most famous quote, but it’s uncertain what part he will play in the end. Will the Kingslayer become the Queenslayer?

Tyrion Lannister: “Never forget who you are. The rest of the world will not.” — Tyrion has long lived in the shadow of his family’s contempt for him, but ultimately he could end up parlaying that power into something useful for himself, especially if the others don’t survive … (This could also be advice he gives to Jon or Dany about their very non-royal upbringings).

Arya Stark: “The North remembers.” — Arya has evolved to become a spirit of vengeance, which will surely continue throughout the final season. The North remembers, and so does she.

Sansa Stark: “The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.” — Sansa, the likely Queen in the North, is giving a reference here to her deceased brother Robb Stark, who was known as the Lone Wolf as he made his way south with his armies. His family pack of siblings have, for the most part, survived (RIP Rickon). Now that they are all coming together, their combined power could save the realm.

Bran Stark: “I’m the Three Eyed Raven now.” — Yes dear, we know.

Brienne Of Tarth: “This goes beyond houses and honor and oaths.” — Brienne has always been defined by her oaths and loyalties, but it looks like in these final days she might be more interested in just doing what is necessary.

Davos Seaworth: “We have to fight, and we need to do it together.” — Always a level-headed advisor, the Onion Knight has (improbably) survived many tumultuous years in Westeros to, hopefully, help bring together warring factions against the Night King.

Euron Greyjoy: “There’s only one reward I want.” — Sorry Euron, I’m sure there are a handful of Greyjoy apologists out there, but for the most part, nobody gives one fig about you or what you want. You might succeed in being a mildly interesting agent of chaos, but otherwise the sooner you’re dispatched with the better.

Grey Worm: “Unsullied fear nothing.” — Aww, Grey Worm gets a poster! That’s nice. I hope he gets a hero’s death.

Jorah Mormont: “No one can survive in this world without help.” — Old Jorah Mormont, who was saved thanks to Samwell Tarley’s research skills. What part he’ll play in these final episodes I cannot say, but he should be proud as hell of his firebrand niece.

Melisandre: “The night is dark and full of terrors.” — Things are tough even for the Lord of Light, who we haven’t heard much from in quite some time …

Missandei: “She’s the queen we chose.” — Aww, Missandei gets a poster! I hope she also has a hero’s death.

Samwell Tarly: “I’m tired of reading about the achievements of better men.” — Sam is ready for action y’all, and it’s only taken eight seasons for us to get here. Don’t get too reckless though, young lad, and we wish you all the best.

Theon Greyjoy: “I always wanted to do the right thing.” — Ehhhhhhh Theon I’m not so sure about that. In fact I’m very certain that is not true. But after an immense amount of humiliation and torture, it seems like you have maybe come around. (BTW … is Yara confirmed dead?)

Varys: “I don’t believe in saviors.” — That’s not a surprising stance from Varys, however, it’s interesting given his general backing of Daenerys. Is his swapping sides again?

The Hound: “You know who’s coming for you. You’ve always known.” — Cleganebowl confirmed.

The Night King: “Fear is for the winter.” — I first read this as “fear is for the winner” and honestly, #TeamNightKing.
