With Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot prepping to shoot in Boston - a stand-in for New York, it seems - the locals have dug up some interesting plot points regarding the all-female leads. We know that Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones are playing the title characters this time around, but until now it wasn't exactly clear what career path led them all to 'bustin.

Thanks to the folks over at the Boston Herald, we've got the following details from the scene:

Wiig and McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. Flash forward a few years and Wiig lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia U. Which is pretty sweet, until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia.

Wiig reunites with McCarthy and the other two proton pack-packing phantom wranglers, and she gets some sweet revenge when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.

So not too far afield from the impetus of the original crew, who mostly started as academics, before that career ran into a roadblock, and then resorted to being Ghostbusters for hire. It worked out pretty well for the guys and I have no doubt that the ladies will be just as successful. I'm rather curious to see how McKinnon and Jones get roped into this, especially since Ernie Hudson's addition to the team as Winston Zeddemore was damn near perfect.

Feig also got in on the fun with a recent tweet while he prepares for tomorrow's start to production:

While those character origins are certainly interesting for context, they're not exactly spoiler-worthy. The following bits of news could be considered spoilers though, so if you'd rather avoid them, avert your eyes now.

As far as scenes go, the report has production shutting down some of the financial district for a few nights in order to film an "epic ghost invasion of Manhattan," so hopefully we'll get a glimpse of that in the eventual trailer. The Boston Herald also "reliably reports" that Slimer will return for this version, though they're less sure about cameo appearances from Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. The latter will likely need a pretty compelling reason to get involved considering how distant he's remained from the film.
