It looks like the original Ghostbusters will make it onto contemporary movie screens well before the third film in the series even enters production.  The 30th anniversary of the 1984 classic is as good a time as any to organize a theatrical re-release, and that's exactly what is coming this Labor Day weekend.  A restored and remastered version of Ghostbusters will play in more than 700 theaters starting August 29th.  It will be a great opportunity to introduce children and newcomers alike to the paranormal property starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, Sigourney Weaver, and the late Harold Ramis.  Coincidentally, this year also marks the 25th anniversary of Ghostbusters II, which will be released on Blu-ray for the first time later this year.  Hit the jump for more.

As EW reports, a restored and remastered version of Ghostbusters will play in theaters this Labor Day weekend.  The re-release is part of a planned anniversary celebration that includes special events and collectible merchandise, but no further details have been revealed just yet.  Here's what Rory Bruer, Sony's president of worldwide distribution, had to say about the event:

Ghostbusters is still one of our studio’s most beloved franchises. I was lucky enough to work on the release of the film on its first run, so it’s a real thrill for me to see that it’s still connecting with audiences everywhere. On the big screen or in home entertainment, this is a great movie to experience again and again.”

Additionally, the Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray will be available alongside the Ghostbusters II 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray on September 16th.  The first-ever appearance of the sequel on Blu-ray will include such special features as new conversations with director Ivan Reitman and Aykroyd, as well as deleted scenes from the sequel.  Both films will be packaged together in a collector's edition, which you can check out below:
