With the start of Season 5 just around the corner, it has been announced that Season 6 of HBO’s Girls will be its last. This news isn’t totally surprising, as series creator Lena Dunham has previously floated the idea that the show would end sooner rather than later. As we previously reported, Dunham offered the possibility of ending the show after Season 6 back in September:
I started working on this show when I was 23, and I’m going to be 30 so it kind of feels right that this show kind of sandwiched my 20s and then I go off into the world.
That seems reasonable enough, given how the show and its characters attempt to reflect the zeitgeist of people and the questions they are confronted with in their 20s. And, six seasons feels like a proper fit for such a show, where it doesn’t overstay its welcome while still being able to remain fresh.
Deadline reports that the decision was not a contentious one between the producers and HBO, as both seemed ready for the next project. And while the series never drew in large audiences, it proved able to break through the noise and have a noticeable impact on the cultural conversation of the moment.
Also, the Judd Apatow-produced show has helped launch the careers of many of its core actors, most notably Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), as well as Zosia Mamet (Mad Men), Allison Williams (Peter Pan Live!), Alex Karpovsky (Hail, Caesar!), and Dunham herself. All seem to have made the most of their opportunity of working on such a unique show and with HBO, and should surely find other interesting work after the sixth and final season airs in 2017.
Until then, the penultimate season of Girls starts February 21st on HBO.
