I’m very much on the record in saying that I’m very, very excited for Gone Girl.  It’s easily one of my five most anticipated films of the year.  I love Gillian Flynn’s book and I’m an ardent fan of director David Fincher, so the fact that I may have to wait another month to see it has me on pins and needles.  I’m not concerned about the film’s ending either, though many people seem to be.  There were some comments from Flynn that Fincher had “started from scratch” in his approach to the book’s finale (Flynn also wrote the film’s script).  Then Fincher offered a hilariously vague comment when asked to elaborate on her statement.  But now we have some new info that may settle the debate (at least until we see the film).

Hit the jump to read about the Gone Girl movie ending.  The film stars Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon, Kim DickensPatrick FugitScoot McNairyMissi PyleCasey WilsonEmily Ratajkowski, and Neil Patrick Harris.  Gone Girl will premiere at this year’s New York Film Festival, and will open nationwide on October 3rd.  Potential spoilers ahead.

A New York Times profile on Ben Affleck makes the following statement (and, for their sake, I hope they had permission to do so):

Mr. Fincher granted The New York Times a private screening at his office. Contrary to early speculation, the film hews closely to the book.

Now, I'm not going to spoil the ending of the book, but I can say that this is pretty much what I expected.  Also, there are different definitions of "changed."  Purely speculation on my part, but there may be some thematic stuff that was altered that didn't register with the NYT writer.  Either way, I'm not any more or less excited about the film.  Bring on October 3rd.

Here’s the official synopsis for Gone Girl:

GONE GIRL – directed by David Fincher and based upon the global bestseller by Gillian Flynn – unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his beautiful wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?
