Season one of Fox’s Batman prequel series Gotham was a bit rough, but this new promo for season two suggests the writers and showrunners might have found a cohesive center in its new group of villains. Even though the first season ended with Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) winning a small victory for the Gotham Police Department, the resolution of the power struggle among the title city’s criminal underground was the driving force of the story. That plotline continues with season two’s tagline “Rise of the Villains” as new antagonists are brought into the show while others continue to evolve into the infamous rogues we know and loathe.
This new promo is pretty short on heroes but heavy on villains, including Robin Lord Taylor’s Penguin, Camren Bicondova’s antihero Cat, and Cory Michael Smith’s Riddler, along with new additions James Frain as Theo Galavan, and Jessica Lucas as his sister Tabitha, aka Tigress. Even though the Galavan siblings are the Big Bads of season two, it’s clear that the marketing focus is centered on the rise of Jerome Valeska, aka the Joker (Cameron Monaghan). Sharp-eyed viewers might also spot Dustin Ybarra as the rumored cannibal Robert Greenwood. No word yet on when Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and the Mad Hatter might make an appearance, but the expansion of Gotham’s villains and their central roles make me slightly more interested in the show’s second season.

Gotham returns for Season 2 on Monday, September 21st on Fox.
The good. The evil. The beginning.
Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world’s greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon’s story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker?
GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), GOTHAM follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering between good and evil, and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.
