The Grand Budapest Hotel and The LEGO Movie will both be released on Blu-ray/DVD on Tuesday, so it’s fitting that the two worlds are combining for a LEGO Grand Budapest Hotel. Now before you get your hopes up, this isn’t a set that will be released for consumers (market research shows that kids might not buy products based on Wes Anderson movies; we are failing our children). However, it’s still a remarkable effort from Ryan Ziegelbauer and his team of eight model builders. They spent 575 hours building and designing the replica. The final build has more than 50,000 LEGO bricks, and it will weigh around 150 pounds, stand 7 feet tall, and be 6.5 feet wide. M. Gustave would be proud.

Here’s the press release:

A very special opening awaits! In celebration of the June 17th Blu-ray and DVD release of THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is readying to unveil a version of the illustrious European hotel constructed entirely of Lego bricks!

Ryan Ziegelbauer and his team of eight model builders – all die-hard fans of Wes Anderson – spent 575 hours building and designing the replica of the exquisite hotel. To construct the model, more than 50,000 certified Lego bricks from collectors and wholesalers were sourced from Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, Germany, Italy and 14 different states in the U.S. The final model will weigh approximately 150 pounds and stand 7 feet tall and 6.5 feet wide.

I tip my hat to 20th Century Fox on this creative way to promote their movie. As a LEGO fan, I hope more studios take note of this approach even if the builders have to release the Kragle. This construction is clearly difficult, but the payoff is well worth it (at least for fans; I have no idea how this will affect Blu-ray/DVD sales).
