There's been plenty of press for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 following its well-attended footage showcase and cast appearance at San Diego Comic-Con but we're still mostly in the dark. We know that Kurt Russell will be playing Ego, a living planet who is also, somehow, the father of Chris Pratt's Star Lord. We also know that Vin Diesel's Baby Groot will be featured alongside Drax (David Bautista), Zoe Saldana's Gamora, and Rocket, voiced again by Bradley Cooper. Sylvester Stallone also has an undisclosed role in all of this and was featured in the footage that fans got to see at SDCC 2016.

So, we're still picking up any little tidbits about the sequel that we can at this point, and today brought a pretty impressive one. Director James Gunn released some concept art from the sequel, which you can take a look at below, via Empire and his Facebook account today, and it divulges what could be a major action set-piece from the film. It shows the team fighting what Gunn called an "Abilisk," and it kinda looks like a more polished version of the final monster in John Carpenter's The Thing. According to several accounts, this creature was also featured in the footage that was screened at SDCC, and as neither Nebula nor Mantis are seen here, one could rightly assume that it might even be the new film's cold open battle. We'll know better when the first trailer hits or when Gunn's latest Marvel film hits theaters on May 5th, 2017.

Here's the new piece of concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2:
