All the superhero hubbub recently has been surrounding Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or Avengers: Age of Ultron, but what about Guardians of the Galaxy 2? The first Marvel Studios film was a massive success, earning big box office, positive reviews, and an enthusiastic response from fans. It was somewhat of a gamble on the studio's part, but the goofy space opera performed spectacularly, and now fans are no doubt eager for the further adventures of the titular group of misfits in the follow-up.

Writer/director James Gunn recently took to the new social media service Periscope (via CBM) and revealed that production on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set to begin February 2016 at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, which has quickly become Marvel’s new base of operations. The first Guardians and Avengers: Age of Ultron were both filmed in London, but subsequent Marvel productions Ant-Man and the soon-to-be-filming Captain America: Civil War set up shop in Atlanta, and it looks as though Guardians 2 will follow.

It’s a curious development and I’m interested to see how/if the location change affects the tone of Guardians. While plenty of scenes in the first movie were shot on soundstages, Gunn also made use of England's landscape in a couple of key on location shoots.

The next Marvel movie to shoot after Captain America: Civil War is Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange, but it’s yet to be seen if that will shoot in London or Atlanta. It’s possible that the London stages are being taken over by Star Wars, as Lucasfilm prepares to begin production on Rogue One this summer, quickly followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII.

During Gunn’s Periscope update, he also revealed that he’s about 70 pages deep into the screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, saying his pitch for the sequel to Marvel was the best experience he ever had with a pitch. Moreover, he confirmed that Karen Gillan’s Nebula will return, and added that he may have found a way for her to appear without Gillan having to shave her head again.

We don’t know any story details about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 just yet, but you can bet that Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper will return. The film opens in theaters on May 5, 2017.
