Guardians of the Galaxy left a big thread hanging about Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) father, and it looks like the sequel is going to pick it up.

Speaking to Vulture, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 writer-director James Gunn says that the sequel will still keep its focus on the misfit family, but whereas the first movie was about Star-Lord’s relationship to his mother, “this is a story about fathers. So it's exciting to go there.”

Although Star-Lord’s father in the comics is J’Son, the Emperor of the Spartoi Empire, Gunn has said since 2013 that it won’t be that character. That will leave plenty of people guessing until at late 2015/early 2016 when casting gets underway, and even then it may remain a mystery if they cast a bunch of older, male actors.

Also, note how Gunn said “fathers”, so it will be interesting to see if there will be any other dads coming into play. If I had to guess, Nebula (Karen Gillen) might still be dealing with her daddy issues with Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Gunn also mentioned how he’s had the story planned for not only Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but also for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, although we don’t know if he’ll still be involved with the franchise at that point or how things will change. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 isn’t due out until May 5, 2017, so that should provide plenty of plot speculation for the time being.
