Earlier today, Marvel released the first sneak peek for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 along with the film's fantastic poster. Written and directed by James Gunn, the follow-up reunites the titular Guardians of the Galaxy—Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Baby Groot (Vin Diesel)—to battle a new threat and search for Peter Quill’s father.

As far as teasers go, this one was just about perfect. It didn't give away too much but it teased a bunch of things; you just have to dig into it a little bit to see more. With that in mind, we pulled 30 images from the trailer to give us a better, frame-by-frame look at everything packed into the teaser's short run time. Sure, there are plenty of shots of the title team battling in space, interacting with each other, and each getting their own standalone shot, but there's much more going on. Things like the space monster Abilisk, perhaps the giant floating head known as Knowhere, and a possible first sighting for Ego the Living Planet.

Curious? Take a look at our trailer breakdown and analysis below to find out more. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5, 2017 and also stars Kurt Russell, Karen Gillian, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff, and Glenn Close.

Here’s the official synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2:

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Abilisk (the Tormentor?)

Back in August, Gunn revealed the following bit of concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that saw the title team taking on a space monster known as Abilisk:

This concept art is widely considered to be the inspiration for the opening action sequence in the sequel, mostly owing to the size of Groot in the picture and the fact that the team was already formed in the previous film, so the sequel's opening should serve to remind audiences why this bunch of a-holes is so awesome. In fact, you can glimpse the tentacle-end of Abilisk in the teaser that was released today!

It seems to be under assault by Gamora in this moment, and the green-skinned warrior appears to be protecting/defending some sort of yellow, glowing light. (Is it an energy source? Something to do with an Infinity Stone? Who knows!) Watch the blink-and-you'll-miss-it sequence below in both GIF and still image form:

Knowhere: The Guardians' HQ

This one's a little less clear, so there's every chance that I'll be wrong about Knowhere returning as a location in GotGV2. We saw Knowhere--located within the decapitated head of an unidentified Celestial--in the first film, which you can glimpse below for a reminder of what it looked like:

And here's a similar shot of Knowhere from the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series:

Now here's a possible series of shots from the sequel's teaser trailer that may be from Knowhere:

This sure looks like the eye of the Celesital, but it's hard to say for sure. The reason I bring it up, aside from visual similarities, is that Knowhere is actually the headquarters of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics, so it'd be great to give them a super sci-fi HQ in the movie as well.

What do you think: Knowhere or no way?

Ego the Living Planet

This one's even more of a stretch. All we see of a presumably alien planet is a bit of a forest setting and some very basic vegetation. The only clues we have that suggest that this might be Ego the Living Planet is that the Milano seems to crash-land there (more on that in a moment) and confirmation back in July that Russell would be playing Star-Lord's father ... and that he would be playing Ego. Yeah. We're still not 100% sure how this sentient planet is going to work out, but this is the best angle we have at the moment.

Here's a look at some of the forest backgrounds captured from the trailer below:

The above images appear to be the location that Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax venture out into after the Milano crashes. I'm not sure if the following image is from the same planet or not, but you'll notice the similar vegetation on the periphery of whatever the hell is happening to these poor folks:

Ego once shot down the Fantastic Four's spaceship, so the planet certainly has the ability to alter the course of space vessels like the Milano. The actual surface of the planet is a little less clear. Most of the time when he appears in the comics, he's basically a giant head in the shape of a planet. In this decade in the Marvel comics, the planet is tied into the characters The Stranger and The Collector (who has already been established in the MCU); there's also an incident in which Ego develops a case of space lice and hires Rocket Raccoon to eradicate them.

Do you think there's a possibility that the Guardians have stumbled onto Ego the Living Planet, who's got a better disguise as a forest planet than a giant face in space? Let us know in the comments!

But where are Rocket Raccoon and Groot? And what's up with Yondu and Nebula?

Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Yondu

Oddly enough, Rocket Racoon--who's seen with Tiny Groot at the end of the teaser trailer--isn't paired up with the other Guardians in this teaser; he's hanging out with the Ravager leader, Yondu! Now, Yondu the space pirate played both sides of the line in the first film, and Rocket Raccoon isn't exactly the best team-player, so it makes a bit of sense that these two characters who operate in the gray area might just end up together for a time. What we're not sure if just what they're up to, especially considering the images featuring the unexpected duo surrounded by a bunch of folks floating in zero gravity, presumably against their will:

Are these oddballs out to free another prisoner from another Nova Corps prison? Or just up to some sort of space shenanigans? And who's the poor sap who gets a hole blasted into their midsection by Rocket?

We can expect Yondu's role to expand significantly in this film, so will his partnership with Rocket lead the both of them (plus Groot) back to the Guardians? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below! But we've still got one more character to talk about.

What's Up with Nebula?

In the first film, Nebula played quite the super-villainess, allying with Ronan the Accuser in a plot to overthrow her adoptive father Thanos; unfortunately for her plans, she was defeated by Gamora just as Ronan was defeated by the gathered Guardians. She evaded capture and fled off into space in a stolen ship, but as the image below shows, she was eventually captured by ... someone:

We're not sure who the gloved, red-cloaked characters are at the moment (though they seem to be the same folks floating in zero gravity in the images above, so perhaps Nebula is the target of Rocket/Groot/Yondu's rescue mission?), but we're sure that'll be clarified before too long.

What's a little stranger is, if you zoom in on the Milano's cockpit in these images, it looks like Nebula (or some other blue-skinned person ... perhaps Yondu?) is in the captain's/co-pilot chair. This might be nothing at all; it's just an oddity I wanted to bring to your attention (and a reason to show off the beautiful Milano once more).

Some of these speculations may be hit or miss, so please let us know what you think in the comments. And if you're James Gunn, feel free to praise us or call us out on social media. We'll find out for sure how close we came to the mark when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuts on May 5, 2017.
