If there's one bunch of currently non-Avenging characters that were all but guaranteed to turn up in Avengers: Infinity War, it's the Guardians of the Galaxy. While we don't know where their story is headed in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we know for sure that their narrative so far has been closely tied to an Infinity Stone (even if James Gunn promises there won't be any in Vol. 2). Oh, and then there's that part where Gamora is Thanos' favorite daughter, making her the one hero primed to have a personal investment in the upcoming clash with the big, purple super villain.
So yeah, if you made the safe bet that the Guardians were going to turn up in Infinity War, guess what? You were right! In a demonstration of why he's got the most Facebook followers on the platform, Vin Diesel dropped the confirmation bomb during a Facebook Live session in which he told his viewers (via ScreenRant).
Diesel said:
...the Guardians will be included in Avengers: Infinity War and that’s incredibly exciting. Incredibly exciting. Incredibly exciting and something that if you were a part of our page you knew before everybody.”
Even if it's obvious, it's pretty funny that Diesel just threw it down like that, DGAF style, considering Marvel's reputation for super secrecy. The real question, of course, is what role the Guardians will play in Infinity War's narrative. Unlike our more earth-bound heroes, they're experts in intergalactic adventure, and very very familiar with their soon to be nemesis.
As I mentioned before, the emotional ground between Thanos and Gamora is rich for mining, as are the possibilities for throwing Peter Quill's goofiness up against Thor's Grandeur or Tony Stark's razor-sharp intellect. It will definitely be interesting to see what screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely concoct to balance what is shaping up to be an enormous ensemble. But we're getting way ahead of ourselves. First up, we've got a decidedly non-Thanos, non-Infinity Stone adventure ahead, and if the Comic-Con footage was any indication, Gunn has pulled off the Guardians' strange magic once again.
