We have two pieces of Guillermo del Toro news for you this afternoon.  First up, Pajiba is reporting that del Toro is producing Midnight Delivery with Gary Ungar (Gothika) for Universal.  The story, written by Neil Cross (the British TV series MI:5) , centers on a father who becomes a drug mule to save his son's life, which isn't the worst reason ever to become a drug mule.

Hit the jump for details on what role del Toro has set for Ron Perlman in At the Mountains of Madness (provided Perlman is available).

Speaking to MTV, del Toro said:

"I wrote a part for him. He read it and if everything falls in place, Ron Perlman has a role in it written specifically for him.  Ron plays Larson, the sort of dog guy, the guy that cares for the dogs and the sled — the part of the expedition that is dog sleds," he explained. "It's a fantastic character. I really love him. He's sort of a pragmatic guy, doesn't care about science or the mythology or the cosmology. He just is a hard-boiled Nordic man, and it is written specifically for him."

A brief recap on At the Mountains of Madness:

  • It's based on the novel by H.P. Lovecraft and has been a passion project of del Toro's for years
  • James Cameron is producing
  • It will be in 3D
  • As we reported earlier this month, Del Toro wants Tom Cruise for the lead but Universal wants James McAvoy
  • Del Toro plans to begin shooting in May 2011
