Gus van Sant is in negotiations to develop and direct “Restless”. The film will be written by first time screenwriter Jason Lew and produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Bryce Howard. Not much is known about the film right now but you can click on the jump and find out the kind of interesting story of how this project came to life.
THR reports that the logline is being kept under wraps for the moment, though it is described as being a “contemporary and distinctive take on young love.” They also talk about how this project came to life by telling us: “Lew and Bryce Howard attended New York University together and it was there that Lew first wrote the story as a play. Howard, who had acted in plays with Lew, got a peek at the story and encouraged him to write it as a screenplay.” If you know your Hollywood families then you know that Bryce Howard is Ron Howard’s daughter so it’s not too difficult to guess how the project landed in Ron Howard and Brian Gazer’s hands I guess it really is all about who you know.
Since so little is known about this project it’s difficult for me to really have any opinion about it. I loved “Milk” and I normally like Van Sant even though I do consider him to be very hit and miss. I do, however, find his misses to be interesting failures most of the time apart from when he’s remaking classic films that should have never been remade. I’m also bummed to see his adaptationn of “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test” get pushed back a little bit more but I still have hope that we will see it soon enough since Van Sant is quite the prolific director and is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
