One of Cannes’ omnipresent directors, Gus Van Sant will return to the South of France this year to present his new film Restless on the opening night of the Un Certain Regard selection, on Thursday, May 12. Gus Van Sant is a favorite at the Cannes Film Festival. He was first nominated in 1995 for To Die For and awarded the Palme d’Or (Best Movie) in 2003 for Elephant. He was also the recipient of the festival’s 60th anniversary award for Paranoid Park in 2007.

Here’s the synopsis, followed by the trailer, for Restless, slated for a US release sometime in 2011:

From Imagine Entertainment comes a powerful and emotional coming of age story, a remarkable film told with honesty and originality that will leave audiences moved. In the film, two outsiders, both shaped by the circumstances that have brought them together, forge a deep and lasting love. Directed by Gus Van Sant, one of the most astute observers of people living life on the edge, comes a take on friendship and young love as engaging and true as it is provocative and stirring. The screenplay is by Jason Lew.

Around 20 movies make up the official selection each year at Un Certain Regard, one of the “side” competitions of the festival. Emir Kusturica, this year’s president of the jury, will present the Prize Un Certain Regard on May 21.

Other notable appearances this year on the Croisette include Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which will screen out of competition on May 14. Jeff Katzenberg, who has made it somewhat of a tradition presenting a DreamWorks animated movie at Cannes every year, will unveil Jennifer Yuh’s 3-D Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom.

The official selection of the main competition will be announced tomorrow, April 14.
