House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Bravery, courage, chivalry

House Positions: Quidditch Seeker

Though Harry doubts his worthiness for Gryffindor, the determined courage that allows him to eventually defeat Voldemort despite everything more than proves his place within the house, as does his firm sense of morality and kindness.

Hermione Granger

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Nerve, bravery, courage.

House Positions: Prefect

Though her intelligence and wit might initially suggest that Hermione would be a perfect fit for Ravenclaw, or her hard-working nature indicates Hufflepuff, Hermione's consistent bravery, even-keel, and nerves of steel in the face of continual danger make her the perfect Gryffindor.

Ron Weasley

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Bravery, courage, loyalty.

House Positions: Quidditch Keeper, Prefect

Though he has his moments of fear, Ron's bravery and loyalty show through in the first book/film and only grow stronger from there. Interestingly, all Weasleys have been sorted into the Gryffindor house, and all but two Weasleys have played on the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

Ginny Weasley

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Bravery, courage, loyalty

House Positions: None

Independent and capable, Ginny is a strong and gifted witch who demonstrates her bravery in the face of any threat. She wields this courage to fight alongside Harry multiple times against Voldemort and his forces.

Fred & George Weasley

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Nerve, courage, bravery, loyalty

House Positions: Quidditch Beaters

This inseparable pair, despite their penchant for pranks and general mischief, are good-natured and endlessly loyal to their friends and family. They'd go on to join Dumbledore's Army and later the Order of the Phoenix, as well as opening and running Weasley's Wizard Wheezings, a joke shop.

Draco Malfoy

Tom Felton in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

House: Slytherin

House Attributes: Ambition, cunning, resourcefulness

House Positions: Quidditch Seeker, Prefect

Rude, sly, and a backhanded bully, Draco Malfoy serves as our primary introduction to how Slytherin house is viewed. But despite sharing a house with so many villians of the series, Draco would have something of a redemption arc, leaving behind the more pointed animosity towards Harry by the end of the series and even teaming up with him in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Luna Lovegood

House: Ravenclaw

House Attributes: Intelligence, learning, wisdom.

House Positions: None

J.K. Rowling has called Luna an "anti-Hermione" with her airy manner and belief in unproven things. However, the two are more alike than this title would imply, as Luna is notably smart, perceptive, honest, and wise, all in line with her Ravenclaw status.

Neville Longbottom

Matthew Lewis in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Bravery, courage, chivalry, loyalty.

House Positions: None

Neville himself questioned why he'd been placed in the house of bravery and not Hufflepuff. It isn't until the series finale, when Neville plays a critical role in the downfall of Voldemort, that he feels he's finally grown into the Gryffindor title.

Cho Chang

House: Ravenclaw

House Attributes: Intelligence, learning, wit

House Positions: Quidditch Seeker

Cho would maintain a kind, smart disposition despite the tumultuous events she goes through. She'd join Dumbledore's Army and has a strong sense of loyalty.

Cedric Diggory

Robert Pattinson in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

House: Hufflepuff

House Attributes: Patience, loyalty, hard work

House Positions: Quidditch Seeker and later Team Leader, Prefect

The only Hufflepuff on our list, Cedric was a popular and accomplished student with a kind heart. He was a skilled Quidditch player and went on to participate in the Triwizard Tournament with Harry Potter.

Albus Dumbledore

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Nerve, courage, bravery, chivalry

House Positions: Unknown

Little is known about Dumbledore's time as a student, save that he was in Gryffindor house. But that makes sense; Dumbledore is said to be 150 years old at the time of his death, so records were probably slim at the time of his education.

Minerva McGonagall

Maggie Smith in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Nerve, courage, bravery, loyalty

House Positions: Quidditch Player

Though the Sorting Hat reportedly took the longest amount of time ever to decide between placing McGonagall in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, she did eventually end up in Gryffindor. It was also during her time at school that she became an officially registered Animagus.

Severus Snape

Alan Rickman in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

House: Slytherin

House Attributes: Ambition, cunning, resourcefulness

House Positions: Head of House

Though Rowling states that Snape possesses an incredible bravery, it's clearly his intelligence and dry cunning that placed him in Slytherin. Snape is perhaps the most shining example that, despite the Slytherin house's less-than-stellar reputation among students of Hogwarts, that Slytherins can still be good and heroic.

Rubeus Hagrid

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Nerve, bravery, loyalty, chivalry

House Positions: None

Though he was expelled in his third year for keeping an acromantula, Hagrid was allowed to stay and become a gamekeeper at the recommendation of his then-transfiguration teacher, Dumbledore.

James Potter

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Nerve, bravery, courage

House Positions: Quidditch Seeker, Head Boy

Despite a streak as something of a bully and troublemaker, James grew into the nerve and bravery of a Gryffindor as well as a kinder young man. This maturity is what would eventually spark his and Lily's relationship.

Lily Potter

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Nerve, bravery, courage

House Positions: Head Girl

Vivacious and kind, Lily was often told by Horace Slughorn that she "should have been in Slytherin." But, her sacrifice for her son in the face of imminent death is definitely in line with the bravery and courage Gryffindors are known for.

Remus Lupin

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Nerve, bravery, courage, loyalty

House Positions: Prefect

Due to his lycanthropy, there was the chance that Lupin wouldn't have been able to even attend Hogwarts — but Dumbledore made an exception to allow him to enroll, as long as safety measures were taken. Though his status as a werewolf was a secret, James Potter, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and later Severus Snape eventually found out.

Sirius Black

House: Gryffindor

House Attributes: Nerve, bravery, chivalry, loyalty

House Positions: None

While the rest of his family were sorted into Slytherin, Black ended up in Gryffindor, where he met James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. The group became best friends for years afterward, so much so that James named Sirius Harry's godfather.

Voldemort/Tom Riddle

House: Slytherin

House Attributes: Leadership, resourcefulness, cunning, ambition

House Positions: None

The final descendent of Salazar Slytherin, He Who Must Not Be Named has left a permanent scar on the house he was a part of. All but one of the Death Eaters were in the same house as Voldemort.
