Marvel’s Agent Carter isn’t set to kick off until 2015, but Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will use this time to pave the way for Peggy Carter’s (Hayley Atwell) spinoff show by including a 1940s flashback in the first episode of season 2.
Peggy Carter made her big screen debut in 2011, serving as the female lead in Captain America: The First Avenger and also popped up in Captain America: The Winter Solider as well, but her appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will mark her television debut. After that, it’s on to her very own show next year. Hit the jump for more. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC on September 23rd at 9/8c.
We’ve known that Carter would make her way onto Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a little while, but now TV Guide reveals how. Carter was once a key member of the Strategic Scientific Reserve, a secret government agency that’s eventually absorbed into S.H.I.E.L.D.. She was on the same path as Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), so now that he’s got to completely rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. after what went down last season, he’s turning to her work for a little inspiration. Executive producer Jed Whedon further explained:
“Coulson is a big student of history and wants to return to those old ideals of Agent Carter's time. He's, like, 'Let's be the S.H.I.E.L.D. we were meant to be!' He wants to do the job right this time."
We’ve also got our very Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 image of Atwell as Peggy Carter in the upcoming episode. In the shot she's got Kenneth Choi’s Jim Morita and Neal McDonough’s Dum Dum Dugan by her side, but there’s no word on whether or not those two will make it into Peggy’s show.
