We’re on the precipice of a new decade—one that will surely bring with it an even greater output of film and television, especially now that every streaming service is desperate to best the competition. No one plays the series game quite like HBO. And with shows like Game of Thrones and Veep coming to an end, the premium cable channel has a tall task ahead in terms of producing new material.

Thankfully, two new series kick things off straight away in January. First, we’ve got The Outsider on January 12, a drama series based on the Stephen King bestseller of the same name. Starring the great Ben Mendelsohn and Jason Bateman, it looks to be a foreboding murder mystery with a bit of a True Detective tone, even tapping into the supernatural.

A day later, The New Pope arrives—a follow-up to The Young Pope. It again stars Jude Law as Lenny Belardo (Pius XIII), history’s first American pope. Created by Paolo Sorrentino, the series also stars John Malkovich and Marilyn Manson (Marilyn Manson??).

Also on the way is Avenue 5 (January 19), a space comedy from Veep creator Armando Iannucci starring Hugh Laurie. Lastly, Larry David is back for a tenth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm (also January 19).

As far as movies goes, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Curse of La Llorona, and American Animals are all on the way in January.
