With the 50th anniversary of the horrific Tate Murders upon us, the tragic crime has become a point of cultural fascination once again. Ryan Murphy tapped into that fascination in American Horror Story: Cult, Quentin Tarantino will feature it in some way in his mysterious Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood later this year, and Kate Bosworth will star in Tate for husband/filmmaker Michael Polish, but first, Hilary Duff will play the role of Sharon Tate in Saban Films’ The Haunting of Sharon Tate.

The film marks a return to the big screen for Duff, who's been keeping busy on TVLand's delightful comedy series Younger social media postin recent years, and hasn't led a live-action film for the better part of a decade. “Had the incredible opportunity of playing Sharon Tate the past two weeks in an independent movie,” Duff said in a social media post. “She was an amazing woman and it was a true honor.”

Directed by Daniel Farrands, the film reimagines the events leading up to the 1969 murder by the members of the Manson Family from Tate’s perspective. According to Deadline, the film is inspired by “an actual quote from Tate, from an interview published a year before her death, wherein she reveals having dreams about ghosts haunting her house and foreseeing her own death at the hands of a satanic cult.” The Haunting of Sharon Tate also stars Jonathan Bennett (Mean Girls) and Lydia Hearst (Z Nation).

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Pregnant with director Roman Polanski's child and awaiting his return from Europe, 26-year-old Hollywood actress Sharon Tate becomes plagued by visions of her imminent death.”
