New TV Spot for THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG Focuses on the Titular Dragon

     November 19, 2013

Warner Bros. has released a new TV spot for director Peter Jackson’s upcoming film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.  The second entry in the Hobbit trilogy finds Biblo (Martin Freeman) and his band of dwarves squaring off against the titular dragon in order to retrieve an item, and this new TV spot puts the focus directly on the massive creature.  Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, Smaug appears to be a rather menacing force of nature, and I’m eager to see the full character once the film finally hits theaters.  That being said, it’d be great to eventually get a look at what Guillermo del Toro originally had planned for the dragon given his penchant for creature design.

Hit the jump to watch the new TV spot.  The film also stars Ian McKellan, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Lee Pace, and Stephen Fry.  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in 2D, 3D, HFR 3D, and IMAX 3D on December 13th.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug:

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.
