Nine years after the release of the first How to Train Your Dragon movie, Jay Baruchel and America Ferrara‘s run as Hiccup and Astrid, respectively, is coming to a close. But even though The Hidden World marks the franchise’s third and final film, there’s no denying that the series made its mark and proved to be a seminal animation franchise for both kids and adults.
Hidden World finds Hiccup (Baruchel) worlds away from his position in the very first film. He started as an awkward outcast who couldn’t battle dragons like the other kids his age, but now not only is he the chief and ruler of Berk, but he’s also responsible for uniting the citizens of Berk with the dragons, creating a one-of-a-kind community where both can happily co-exist. The problem is, their dragon utopia is getting a little too crowded for the safety of the population, so it falls to Hiccup and Toothless to find a new home and that’s when Hiccup turns his attention to finding a mythical hidden world.
With How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World arriving in theaters on February 22nd, I got the opportunity to chat with Baruchel and Ferrara about how they pictured adult Hiccup and Astrid when they first signed on and how that compares to what we see in this last installment, the legacy of the series, and watching Dean DeBlois get the uncommon opportunity to complete an animated trilogy as a director. You can hear about all of that and more in the video interview at the top of this article.
