Why are talented actors working with Shawn Levy? I guess Steve Carell and Tina Fey must love “Cheaper by the Dozen” so that’s why they would take their off-season time to make “Date Night”. And now we discover it’s possible that Hugh Jackman sits down and watches “Night at the Museum” every night as it inspires him to greatness. Well now Mr. Jackman gets to live the dream as he’s now in talks to star in Levy’s next movie, “Real Steel”. Hit the jump and embrace mediocrity.
According to Variety, Jackman is in talks to star in “Real Steel”, a “Rocky”-esque tale of a former boxer who becomes a struggling robo-boxing promoter after human fighting is deemed too violent. Just look at the massive success of “Battlebots” combined with the total failure of MMA fighting and this film is both timely and prescient.
Jackman’s character discovers a discarded robot who always seems to win. But since this is intended to be a family movie, Jackman will also discover he has a 13-year-old son and they’ll bond over the robot brawls. My hope is that he discovers the discarded robot and the 13-year-old son in the same dumpster.
I can’t understand why these successful actors, who don’t need to waste their cred on this kind of paycheck and can do better if they want to star in a movie their kids can see, will work with a hack like Shawn Levy. And he is a hack. He stamps out studio product designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator and he doesn’t flop because parents are desperate for family fare and so who gives a crap about quality? I do but I start to question folks like Carell, Fey, and Jackson when they sign on to work with a guy like Levy.
