‘Independence Day: Resurgence’: New TV Spot Reveals Brent Spiner’s Return

     April 4, 2016

20th Century Fox has released a new Independence Day: Resurgence TV spot for director Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi blockbuster sequel, and it features the return of an incredibly memorable character from the first film. Star Trek alum Brent Spiner made a serious impression in Independence Day as an Area 51 scientist whose enthusiasm for the alien species made him an easy target to be used as a human speakerphone. But as was revealed during the casting process, Spiner’s character survived, and we see Dr. Brackish Okun back in action in this new TV spot, along with a different character meeting a fate similar to Okun’s in the 1996 film.

Resurgence takes place 20 years after the events of the first film, as humanity has used the alien technology left behind to create a massive defense program to protect the planet. The aliens, however, have gathered reinforcements and are now back to finish the job, and it’s up to those that spearheaded the fight against the invaders the first time around to find a way to prevent an even larger scale invasion.

While Hollywood’s new penchant for mining 90s pop culture nuggets simply for the sake of nostalgia is somewhat irksome, Independence Day: Resurgence seems fully aware that it’s a nostalgia trip, and I’m surprisingly excited to dive back into this world once more. I mean really, what’s not to like about Jeff Goldblum leading a sci-fi blockbuster?

Check out the new TV spot below followed by links to all of Perri’s set visit coverage. The film also stars Liam Hemsworth, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Maika Monroe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, and Sela Ward. Independence Day: Resurgence opens in theaters on June 24th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Independence Day: Resurgence:

We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
