As the new Inferno trailer shows, you can’t keep a good symbologist down. In the new film starring Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, Langdon is in Italy trying to stop a super-virus from being unleashed on the populace by solving clues related to Dante’s Inferno.

I was a bit confused as to why Sony keeps cranking out these movies, and then I checked the box office totals. The Da Vinci Code raked in $758 million worldwide while the sequel, Angels & Demons, pulled in $485 million. While that’s a fairly steep drop, you have to remember that A) Da Vinci Code was a worldwide phenomenon, so of course the film adaptation was going to be a hit; and B) making almost half a billion worldwide is nothing to sneeze at. Sony clearly hopes that they’ve still got a viable franchise with these Robert Langdon movies, and perhaps that’s the case. They seem to have a formula that works for people, and it will be interesting to see if there’s still enthusiasm for Langdon’s latest adventure.

Check out the new Inferno trailer below. The film opens October 28th, and also stars Felicity Jones, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, Ben Foster, and Sidse Babett Knudsen.

Here’s the official synopsis for Inferno:

Academy Award® winner Ron Howard returns to direct the latest bestseller in Dan Brown’s (Da Vinci Code) billion-dollar Robert Langdon series, Inferno, which finds the famous symbologist (again played by Tom Hanks) on a trail of clues tied to the great Dante himself. When Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones), a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories. Together, they race across Europe and against the clock to stop a madman from unleashing a global virus that would wipe out half of the world’s population.
