While I took issue with some elements of Interstellar, the look of the film wasn't one of them.  Director Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema crafted some amazing visuals, and part of that came from Nolan's heavy reliance on practical effects.  Green screen has become standard for blockbuster filmmaking, and while Interstellar still uses it, Nolan knows how the immediacy of practical effects can affect and enhance performances and the viewing experience.

The New York Times has provided an Anatomy of a Scene with Nolan narrating the scene of Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), Brand (Anne Hathaway), and Doyle (Wes Bentley) landing on a planet's surface, and the director explains how the various rigs and models were utilized to create an immersive experience.  Regardless of your feeling about the overall movie, this Interstellar featurette is an enlightening look both into filmmaking and Nolan's process.  Hit the jump to check it out.
