‘Into the Forest’ Trailer: Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood Are Powerless in Sci-Fi Thriller

     May 12, 2016

A24 and DirecTV have unveiled the first trailer for the low-key apocalypse thriller Into the Forest, which stars Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Woods who find themselves in peril after a continent-wide power outage. The two must struggle to survive in a remote country house as unknown persons cross their paths. Mansfield Park and Kit Kittredge: An American Girl filmmaker Patricia Rozema writes and directs the picture, based on the novel of the same name by Jean Hegland, and it’s certainly new territory for the director.

The film looks pretty solid, and honestly reminds me of the terrific Emily St. John Mandel sci-fi novel Station Eleven, which navigates similar territory albeit not under the guise of the thriller or horror genre. There’s a solid visual palette that Rozema strikes here, and I’ll be curious to see if the story devolves into a standard home invasion thriller or if she broaches more interesting territory.

Check out the trailer and first poster below. The film also stars Max Minghella, Callum Keith Rennie, Michael Eklund, and Wendy Crewson. Into the Forest will be available exclusively on DirecTV on June 23rd and opens in theaters on July 29th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Into the Forest:

Set in the near future, this riveting and suspenseful apocalyptic drama follows two sisters, Nell (Ellen Page) and Eva (Evan Rachel Wood) who live in the Pacific Northwest with their kindly father, Robert. Nell is focused on her studies and Eva is training to be a dancer, but their peaceful lives are disrupted one day by what turns out to be a continent-wide blackout. Whereas at first the family bond together and try to make the most of their difficult circumstances, as time gone on, the challenges become more serious.   In the wake of a shocking and violent confrontation that Robert has with a menacing passerby, the sisters must work together in order to survive in their increasingly treacherous new world.
